Late September (guess hes missing some school) My sister lives in Newport and said we could crash at her pad for the week. My friend said he still has my old 5'8" rusty and my 8'4" rusty boards I left with him when I moved to NYC (says they are worse for wear but I haven't surfed in 6 years anyway). He always said he wanted to learn to surf (and see the ocean poor kid has never been in the ocean) and some 1 on 1 time and a steak somewhere should be the bonding experience. Cool ? better than my idea of an Itunes card LOL . A memory for him and learn about his pseudo dads upbringing. Ill probably be selling one of my trucks soon for food for the trip LOL.. Thanks for your help

That is a great idea! Being a dad myself...that sounds way cool for both of you

dont tell him at all. just steal some of his clothes out of the laundry, put it in a bag, If the tickets are for early morning, offer to drive him to school. with the bags already in the trunk. after a minute he will be confused as why you arent going to school. show up at the airport. then ask him to grab the tickets out of the glove compartment. if it is during school hours, all the better. then u can snag his phone and ipod charger(if he is like me he should already have his phone and ipod on him.) then go to school, call him down to attendance and sign him out. when he asks why, say its important. drive to the airport, tell him to grab tickets out of the glovebox.
It will cost nothing but a bit of time to do that, and it will add to the unforgettablenes

Love the wife part...LMAO
I do believe time heals all wounds, and over time, and this trip, hopefully you and he can become a stronger family for it....best of luck to you both.

The suprise thing sounds awesome. I've heard of other parents doing that for trips and the kids are always super enthusiastic.
Have fun!

in-n-out I didn't even think of that, screw the surfing etc. That burger will make him 1 happy man. Nothing like an in-n-out.. and when he looks at the menu ordering a double double ill say " tell them to make it animal style". damn im hungry now. Living in Chicago all his life hes never had that slice of heaven

Ah...in-n-out...makes me want some. Just 2 blocks away from where I live. Was a godsend when they built it a few years ago. We had to drive like 15 blocks before (still worth it...)
As for the idea - I think it's awesome. I'd like to do stuff with my dad, but he's so damn busy I'll be lucky to get his attention for a full 60 seconds...
All my friends always say "well hey you have a cool car and all this stuff..." - some people just don't get it, or don't know what they have till it's gone. Yeah so I get some posh things, but I hardly ever talk to my dad because of it.

Great idea...mucho better than some crappy phone (or substitute other junk) that'll get smashed or lost
My only concern would be the surprise element...I remember how backward my thinking was at 16 & I suspect I may have been less than appreciative of that sort of suprise. Would have messed up my stellar social life!! I'd have much preferred to bore my friends to death reminding them where I was going etc...just a thought

those are all what I was thinking, my dad spent 1/2 his life in Japan and told me " I can't be there for you emotionally but I can monetariliy" Thats cute and all and I love my fast car but it leaves you wanting is suppose. also I was worried that would be an issue with him the "I had brittneys party on friday" you ruined my life now everyone will hate me. I have faith that an in-n-out burger and a fat newport tube will cure all that. I hope
