I just bought a TC3 to play with indoors this winter and am currently shopping around for wheels/tires. I like how the HPI tires are replicas of real 1/1 tires, but of course licensing a brand-name tire increases the cost.

Pattern/design doesn't affect traction as much as the compound the tire is made of. A soft tire is going to stick to the track like glue, but will wear out much faster. Conversely, a hard tire will last a long time but won't have as much traction. It's all about finding the balance that works best for you. Like you phildogg I don't race, I just bash around for fun. I'll be willing to sacrifice a little bit of traction to get a harder, longer lasting tire.
