I'm sorry to hear that man. It's a shitty situation. But if your sister knew she had a dog that was protective of his food and she left it alone with a kitten she was asking for trouble. This wasn't a freak occurence, rather just what happens with animals. Even humane societies check if a dog has guarding behavior, and if they do they don't adopt them out. These are the things that happen when animal lovers think with their heart instead of their head.

Well, that's a shitty situation.

Whether the dog is a rescue or not, guarding his food like that is unacceptable and personally it would already be "dealt with". That sounds cruel, but I am an animal lover(like as in, hates watching seals die on discovery haha). What would happen if you have a newborn that was crawling around the floor, and went to "pet puppy" as he was eating. Would the dog snap and bit the child in the face?

Thats my biggest fear at this point, as kids are on the way.

The dog needs to be out of that house if they have kids on the way. There is absolutely no place in a household for a small child and a dog with food aggression or any aggressive behavior for that matter.

And sorry to hear about the kitten. I have a soft spot for cats...we have 5 of them.

If that's the case, they have NO business keeping that dog. It needs to go to a child-free home or be put down.

I agree, and this could be a very good warning and sign before something more tragic happened with kids. i'm not gonna be the one to suggest getting rid of the dogs though....

Why won't you be the one to suggest getting rid of the dogs?

That sounds like the start of a family feud. You can certainly ask questions though.> Are you sure the kids will be safe after something like this happened?, Are you worried about something happening to the kids?

There are always ways to get your point across without "telling" someone what to do. You could also blame us, say "people online think the children may be at risk"

You can't blame an animal lover for loving animals. She was clearly just trying to help them. Just a shitty deal all around. Something needs to be said though. What if one of the kids is running around with a twinkie and the dog decides it wants the twinkie?

I hope I don't come across as callous. I grew up on a farm and witnessed the birth and death of animals 100 times over. I've pulled live lambs out of dead ewes. I would never intentionally hurt an animal, but I would never compromise my life/family/finances/dinner for an animal. Just me.

Good luck freeze, and never bring your kitty to your sisters place!

My family had a experience just like that......

When my Brother and Sister in law got married two things happened....she got pregnant and they bought two basset hounds, one male one female.(had them both clipped too)

The female basset named Abby grew very close to my sister in law in the months that she was pregnant, and when the baby popped out(though I don't quite remember her saying it was that easy...) Abby and the Spencer liked the baby and every thing was peachy......until, Abby realize she wasn't getting all the attention she started to become a real bitch. But since both our families are dog lovers, they didn't think any thing of it "dogs can be jealous she'll get over it" Need less to say, the problem didn't get any better.....Then one day the family was having lunch and as you guys know, baby's make a lot of mess, and with the clean up crew still in full swing My niece got down to go play.........A few barks a babies cry and short scuffle later Abby had my nieces head in her mouth....All of it

Ever see a Dog fly? I have, right threw the kitchen and out the door. My niece was unharmed but the next day they got rid of the dog. They gave it to my in laws brother. And who says Dogs don't hold grudges? Years later He brought the dog with him on a visit, that didn't go over well nothing happened but that dog had a grudge. So she's never allowed to return again.

And as for the Spencer? well lets just say he's still the families favorite

*shudders* And these stray and abused retrievers are much bigger and stronger then a basset. Shit......my sister has not been making good choices about animals with her head the last few years

Wow. I can't even imagine. In my house that dog would have been put down immediately with no hesitation. I would never kill an animal for no reason, but no animal of any kind attempts to hurt my child and lives to repeat that mistake.
