IDK, imo we are more evolved animals and civilized people because we can show animals compassion and understanding. Its not a matter of can we, but ought we. Ironically, cats don't show any of these emotions and routinely maim, torture and kill other animals for fun.

There may be an ambundance of cats or other animals in the world, but so too are there humans. I don't have a lot of sympathy for adult humans who have free will and the ability of reason, but choose to use their gift of existance for inflicting needless pain and suffering or other such evil on others. F'em. If that crazy bastard is doing that to cats now, who wants to trust their kids or pets to live in the same neighborhood?
