They are already back, about 7:30 this morning.

While they were still far out at sea it must have been deemed a bigger risk to try and load and transport people on the lifeboats, than to let them deal with the conditions on-board. It was only 3 days I think (not that I would want to deal with it, but can't see anything that life threatening). I'm sure if there where any people at risk of serious harm they would have evacuated them accordingly by lifeboat or helicopter.

I've been on 2 cruises, both Carnival. First one went off without a hitch. Second one the boat broke down bringing back the previous group, so we missed almost 2 whole days of our 7 day trip, and Carnival's repayment: everyone got $10 credit at the gift shop. We calculated the cost of the time we missed out on to be around $100-200 per person. Everyone on-board was a bit pissed about that...
