I'm pretty sure on my mesh as well. I tried the paper method once on my slash 2 years ago when I first got it, figured it was crap and have since done it by feel. Just a little wiggle (all the way around the spur) is all you need. I've also temped the pinion, never any higher than motor temps.
Plastic spur is showing no signs of wear yet, and I figure if my mesh was bad it would go quicker than a hardened steel pinion. I will say that the savage flux is tougher to set the mesh than anything else I've set meshes on.
