Well, that soudns odd. Electronics usually like the cold better, but batteries tend to drain faster. Maybe they are dropping too much voltage under load when it's cold out? Kinda makes sense too because you said it starts working again in a few minutes - gives the battery voltage time to drift back up. Although, I would think you'd notice a loss in speed and/or power if it was the batteries.
