I like some heavy metal music, but agree with the people saying the screaming ruins it for a lot of bands, so I don't listen to that many metal bands. My brother does so I know some of the bands listed. Good metal is the best type of music though I think.
My favourite band at the moment would probably be Opeth (someone called them melodic death metal, which kind makes sense if you've listened to them a bit). Saw them in September and they were pretty good. There not quite as fast as some other metal, and you have to get used to long songs with Opeth, since the average song is over 8 minutes long, but that's part of what I like about them.
Some of my favourite songs:
Opeth - Wreath, Deliverence, April Ethereal, Epilogue, When, Demon of the fall, Karma, Black rose immortal (20 min 14s), Funeral Portrait, Credence (no metal), Black water park, The Draper Falls, The Leper Affinity, Master's Apprentice, Ghost of Perdition, The Grand Conjuration. Plus a few others
Metallica - Sad but true, To Live is to die, Holier than thou, The God That Failed, One, Harvester Of Sorrow, Master Of Puppets, Sanitarium, The Thing That Should Not Be, Orion, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade To Black, Of Wolf And Man etc
Rage Against The Machine - Calm Like A Bomb, Guerilla Radio, Bulls On Parade, Revolver, Killin In The Name Of, Wake Up
Tool - Vicarious, Triad, The Grudge, Hooker With A Penis (stupid name, good song), Stinkfist, Aenema, H, You Lied, The Pot, Jambi, 10 000 days.
Karnivool - Pretty much anything off the Themata CD (Lifelike http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=WK-tZvcE8N4), The Only Way
Cog - My Enemy (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=N6J7TUHDzC8), Bird Of Feather, What If, Real Life.
Plus many other songs, by lots of different types of bands.

I listen to whatever is on Liquid Metal #27 on Sirius Satellite radio. I got tired of wasting time finding and downloading good music or buying a whole cd to only like 2-3 songs. At least this way I now hear a wide variety of bands. I agree the screaming stinks.

Awesome. Metal is good workout music- it's also good driving music, eating music, sleeping music, and relaxing music.

Ok time for critics corner... I won't be too hard on ya I promise.

I like alot of what I see here, ATR, LOG, In Flames, Kata, FF (gods) and then it comes- Metallica - sorry guys they are about as exciting as a candle in a light bulb factory, I actually have a pet name for them which I won't repeat here as it would be needlessly offensive to said fans. And what the hell is it with you young'uns still beating the 70's classic rock dead horse- I'm 36 and I was tired of that crap before the 70's were even over!

I swear the radio plays about 25 songs- same order every day, playlist NEVER changes- but when Layla comes on someone HAS to say

"GREAT song man!"

UGH makes me want to chew friggin concrete...

Anyway rock on wit yo bad selves and no harm intended.

Check out Byzantine "Jeremiad" on Youtube -or anything by these guys- stunning- and the new In Flames "Alias" on yt also.

Was gonna list a few more but this is easier- www.last.fm/user/phase_illusion

There should be one or two there you'll like

Byzantine... Their song "Taking Up Serpents" is pretty awesome. I do like Metallica, I just wish their songs were about half their length. It's good, but the same riff over and over again gets old, quick. Also, if you really pay attention, their songs have sooo much "dead space" where there isn't any music at all. It's in small increments, but it all adds up.

Byzantine actually broke up just about a year ago- right after their third album -Oblivion Beckons was released- shame. There isn't much from them available for freeplay on the net it seems- but I have all 3 albums and they are all masterworks of the genre IMO.

As far as Metallica, the last good album I think was Master of Puppets- if not only for it's lyrical brilliance in commenting on society's inherent dysfunction...... ok I'm no critic really but And Justice For All was similar in message and feel- but had poor production quality- very tinny and hollow sounding--- again I'm not a critic but- 'Orion' I still think, is genius.... they sold out boys.

The Black Album. The beginning of the End........ I'll just leave it at that
