My first real RC was a Tamiya Subaru Brat, then a Hornet. We're going back to the stick radio days.... '84-'86 ish, so electric performance wasn't all that and I thought I wanted a nitro. So I ended up getting an 8th scale .21 'buggy' from (think it was) Hobby Shack. And a hot new Futaba Attack(!) 2 channel AM superdeluxe stick radio.
I was the SH!T
Until I figured out what a piece of crap I just spent like 6 bills on. In 1986 dollar$.....
Untuneable, clutch was garbage, brakes not even worth mentioning, and when it did run "right" it was uncontrollable. Sold it soon thereafter and decided the Tamiyas were still tough to beat, 3 step mechanical ESC
with reverse baby!
Fast forward to 2006, just got my V1 Mute done and ready to try the sky. So I got a Venom Night Ranger
3D! Yeaaaaah.
I should have known it would have much in common with Night Ranger, the 80s band. Unflyable Walkera knock-off turd never-parts-in-stock POS wallet emptier.
So helis + me =
Not one to give up easily, I thought, "maybe a plane?"
I got a Diablo. I forget who makes it, I don't care.
The emphasis needs to be put on the last 3 letters of that name. Total crap. Brushed EDF. Then bought a BL ESC, and a stupid high kv inrunner. Just crashed faster and harder. Not to mention the thing sounded like a pissed-off Shop Vac. Yeah, neighbors are gonna
love this....
I was almost done with planes... until I got my Super Cub. I still suck at flying, but at least the damn thing crashes in the
last direction I left it in and I have some hope now..... some. And what a blast making these things stupidly overpowered. I am running a CC T-bird 54, 25C packs and a 1320 kv outrunner which is good for a theoretical 17,000 rpm.... in a 30 ounce plane.
I'm not sure if the younger guys can really appreciate how far things have come, but us codgers sure do. Used to be the stuff of RC dreams.
I have two real good ones, I'll post later...
