Damaged Lipo, How bad? - 03.12.2009, 07:12 PM

I got my new Zippy-H 4000mAh 25-35C 4S1P lipo in the mail today and tossed it in my Raze Buggy as soon as I got home. Right away I was impressed with the punch, and a second later the buggy lawn darted and the improperly sucured lipo shot out like a rocket. There are not any punctures in the pack but a couple good dents. Let me know what you think as far as if I should dispose of the pack or run it. Thanks.

-Brian

If there are no punctures, I would try to smooth out the wrinkles.

Re-shrink it again before you run it though.

It appears like it might be ok.

If there are punctures, then those cells with holes are done.

Just be SURE it is properly secured. Looks like a close call to me.

seems to me ok. anyway the bad thing with zippy-h is their shrink.

double check the pack from puff and punctures. if not just buy good heat shrink

Thanks for the quick reply's guys!!! I was thinking the same thing about it being a close call also but just wanted a little reassurance if you know what I mean.

Could you point me in the right direction to get shrink wrap for batteries? I've got a few that could use a new skin on them.

I'll be sure not to run it again until I rewrap the pack. Thanks again.

I've already got a couple I'm going to send him to check out for me so I may as well add this one to the shipment. Thanks for your input.

That is a bad crinkle, I wouldn't chance running it in a high power vehicle any more. There could possibly be shorts between the laminate layers where the folds are.

What about a Rustler how does that qualify as far as high power is concerned? MM or 80a HW esc with medusa 36-60-2000 or when I get it 36-50-3300? thanks

I have run worse...

Try to carefully smooth it out. It should be ok. After a couple of cycles you will see if it gets out of balance from the other cells. If not you are good to go...

As far as pack damage goes, I have some test packs that I am abusing that have had a variety of issues. Most are torn foil, and I am having decent success with sealing them back up and running them...

If you want to send it to me with the rest I can eyeball it.

As for pack supplies, suck as shrink, try cheapbatterypacks.com. All of my stuff comes from there.

Well the man has spoken. I'll smooth out the pack and give it a few easy cycles in the rustler then we'll see how the cells are. Thanks for all the responces. The people here at RCM really seem to have a great handle on the Brushless/ Lipo stuff.

No prob Brain! Hopefully some of the more experienced users know what they are talking about... I do wonder sometimes though... I think some people just talk (type?) out of their ass...

I have seen worse ran for sure. One guy had his pack bent in half because of how he mounted it (and crashed), then it got ran over by a car and flattened back out. And he ran it more.

But you won't catch me doing it. I am a weenie about lipos and always suggest caution.

I got a bunch of different sized heat shrink tubing from MaxAmps. I always put on another layer of shrink on my batteries for the added protection. Call them up directly as they don't list them on their site.

Lipo weenie would be a bad nickname...
