Also keep in mind the pinion spins much more than the spur does. So even if the material on both was identical the pinion would wear faster. Say you run 13/46 gearing, the pinion rotates 3.5 times more than the spur. So hardened pinon needs to be many times harder than the spur to survive...

I had a non hardened pinion with a plastic spur for a couple of months with very little wear. One night at racing my mesh slipped a bit and melted the spur. My only spare spur was a steel one, so I decided to use it for the last race which is only 5 minutes. After 4 minutes the pinion had no teeth left at all and my car had no drive.

This is why balance is very important! This happened to me when I had my motor and battery both mounted on the left side.
