Hmm, 16.75 : 1 sounds a little high so I wouldn't be surprised if the the run time is shorter.
The stock e-maxx gear ratio's are:
1st gear: 28.9:1
2nd gear: 17.9:1
If/When you get a brushless system, I would recommend running the truck ~20:1 gear ratio, so probably a 15t or 16t pinion.
Nowadays, I always error on the side of caution (rather start with too low of gearing than high). You can always gear up if its too slow.
Yep, the smaller pinion will produce more bottom end but a lower top speed. You'll need to try different gearing to find the sweet spot. You don't want to over heat your motor or esc (I know, because I've done it). A BL motor shouldn't get over 180F
So higher gearing = a hotter running motor = less runtime
Here's some quick info about motors (FYI)
kv = rpm per volt
The 9L has 2731kv so at 14 cells or 16.8 volts your rpm will be 45880
At this max RPM I would suggest around a 22:1 gear ratio or a 15t pinion. I basically came to this conclusion from personal trial and error.
The 8L has a 3072kv so at 12 cells or 14.4 volts your max rpm will be 44236
You can adjust your rpm by adding or removing voltage.
I personally would favor getting the 9L over the 8L because the 9L runs at approx the same rpm at a higher voltage (more efficiency)
uhh if you dont want to blow diff and gears why not use a Mild BL like an HV-Maxx
I know u alrdy said u dont want HV
but its a good mild BL that wont blow your gears all over
but after a long time of running like 4 months
of course somethings gonna give sometime
like my maxx
my diffs and axles started breaking in half
and blowing screws and gears
oh yeah im running 7cell 2x HV-Maxx with 12/70 gearing
ya, Id prob be happy with a hvmaxx....but they are 250ish and for that i heep thinking should I want for the mamba maxx. Id get a used one perhaps, thats an option but there arent that many out there, thats all.
hvmaxx is better then buying a new dually esc and hotter motors and id prob get longer run times too.
so either way it seems like the recommendation is to get more low end, and lower the overall high RPM output.....thall give me more run time and more response off the line, that I can handle :)
Im still sure the hvmaxx is respectable...just got crazy when I got it and say you all posting these high end BLs so I was going nuts :)
Well elite you have to start somewhere. I started with the hv maxx as well. Even had two on one truck. I wish I would have found this place before had though. For the 250ish you put in the maxx you can run a sensorless for a couple more $. Jmo As long as you go brushless you doing good. :)

The hav maxx is nice to a point. I liked it when I first got it. It is a smooth motor. The hv maxx is a sensored motor. It has the wires to tell the esc what it is doing. I like the sensorless motors better. I really like the xl feigaos and such. One 7xl will out do 2 hvmaxx. You just have to upgrade the drive train. It is a lot of options. Figure out how many cells you going to run. That will put a range on what you can get or want to get. Good luck and happy rcing.
Peace!

I've started my brushless career with a Kontronik 480-42( similar to a lehner 4200 basic) in a B4 with 10 cells and the results were addictive. Brushless is nitro's most feared nightmare.
The name is Alawi. You can call me Al.
Nice to meet you!
i say start browsing ebay for a used HV
=)
hey my HV keeps me happy
nice speed and torque
and its a perfect motor for me since i dont really have much running space
