$50 actually. You can still find some 12 month +1 extra month cards in some stores but MS has switched to straight 12 month subscriptions for whatever reason. You can also pay via credit card. Silver will let you download demo's as well but Gold access will get access to some demo's, video's, addons ect... sooner then silver. Gold is required for all online gaming, no two ways around it. Pay to play is the name on Live.

With Xbox, if your not online however, your missing out 50% of the experience. Of course, then you gotta deal with all the cussing, slang, racial and sexist remarks that goes with online voice chat. And believe me, there are some VERY weird and vocal people on Live. I've heard 10 year olds cuss like sailors in Halo 3 and i've actually heard what sounded like orgys or sex in the background on other games, not including webcam games which i've seen some VERY disturbing stuff.
You can report people that do bad stuff, but they rarely get punished and when your dealing with millions of people, its all the more harder to control and keep clean. Like everything else, pluses and minuses
