Erm, Castle 1520 or 1717? Still $$$, but cheaper than a real neu. Other than that, some sort of outrunner maybe, but getting the gearing/rpms/voltage right might be a pain...

I'm going to experiment with a few larger outrunner motors from Hobby City on my Redcat Rampage. I'll post results as soon as I get things all hooked up. I'm also using the Sentillion ESC and figure that with up to 12s to play with, I have room to ramp up the voltage on a direct drive (instead of center diff) setup with two packs on either side of the mounted motor. We'll see..

Startup will be your enemy. If you could figure out how to utilize some sort of clutch on each end of the motor, well that would work great. Esc startup is on the of big hurdles to direct to diff drive, and plane escs do not have very good startup profiles anyways...

Building a brushless 1/5 is expensive no matter what. Better save up and buy the right stuff or not do it at all. If you want a Ferrari...

Large scalers are pricey, electric large scale is going to cost even more. I think the big outrunners from HobbyCity are the best bet other than a 2215 or maybe a Neu 1527.

I really do not see why a properly setup 1/5 scale truck could not use a 1527... Still need to be HV, to benefit from the lower amp draw, but a 1527 should be ok. I plan to run a 1527 2y on my 1/5 scale savage on 10-12s lipo.

Should be fine, but AFAIK it has never been done before. IIRC the 1527 is rated to 3,500 watts which should be plenty.

I ran my 1521/1Y on my heavy BPP truggy on 10S twice and it was just ground shaking power. The ESC (Schulze 40.160) was a bit warmer then usual and the motor was about the same temp. which seemed like 130-150F. It's all a matter of finding the correct load the ESC and motor will like. I've found it on a few set up ranging from 1/18-1/8 scale and I haven't changed much. The most important thing I found was to get a data logger to see how many amps a particular set up is asking for. It might not be accurate, but it's plenty to determine what kind of batteries one would need to match the amp draw.
