Viper R/C 1800kv Nude shots with dirty hand

I finally got the Viper Buggy motor in. Packaging is excellent and delivery service is top notch. I will post more once I get some free time.

It's rated at 1800kV
2 Pole rotor with 3 slot stator
5mm Pinion shaft
7.35mm Rotor shaft cut down to 5mm in the front
4.47mm Rotor shaft in the rear. So rear bearing is smaller than the front.
45.04mm Magnet length
13.82mm Magnet diameter

The motor feels notchy.
The back cover is plastic.
The sensor is replaceable.
The rear has a rubber seal.
Assembly is very good.
Front motor screws are 2mm and the rear are 1.5mm hex.
Heavy copper tabs.
Front has shims and spring assembly.

Seems like many have vaited for the Viper 1/8's. I wish they were 4-pole.... I would love to try one of these, one of the new orion 4-poles, and thunder power has announced the release of some 4-poler's too.

Thanks for the naked pics. Your hands are so nice, do you use lotion?

 No that is all natural!

This motor looks like what the LRP tried to be. A 2 pole sensored monster. This motor has its purpose. At times you don't need the torque of a 4 pole motor, but want faster spool up. Another thing you can use at your advantage is Turbo, which you can't really use with a 4 pole motor. You can go nuts with timing and set when you want your timing advance to kick in.
The Castle, Tekin, Tekno, and Plettenberg that I have are all 4 pole motors, but they all behave differently and they all have their purpose.

Hmmm, so this might be good in a buggy. I have more than enough torque as it is with my 1717 1y right now. And I am in the market for a 1800kv motor anyway.

How much does it weigh?

snellemin 08.03.2011 02:57 PM

Viper list the buggy motor @ 12.91oz / 366g.

CarstenL 08.03.2011 04:51 PM

Great, that would save me another 90g on my total weight.

I just got mine installed in my GT, 2450kv on 4S. Hopefully have some time to play with it this weekend. This will be my first time trying out a 2-pole for 1/8 scale.

I don't believe those are your hands, you used a hand model didn't you?Besides I thought you were right handed, so wouldn't that be your "clean" hand?

BTW: I am back in town if you wanted to bring over that office software. I have my scale here and we can weigh it and see if they are just guessing on weight. You know how I amm with weights.

Update

Did a test run today. It's nite and still 100F outside. The motor is what I expected to be. It has a bit more power then the LRP 1/8 motor. I couldn't get it started in sensored mode with the RX8, so I just ran it in sensorless mode. The RX8 started up the motor just fine. I'll check later if it was my sensor cable or maybe just a bad sensor.

I just ran the GTP up and down the street. The power was nice and smooth and braking was strong with my gearing. I did some hard starts and hard braking just to see how the motor would do. The motor was @ 176F and the ESC was @ 107F.

My conclusion so far; This motor is good for a light 1/8 scale car or when the weather is cold. Power band is smooth making for easy driving. I still need to figure out the sensor issue.

Tekin RX8 ESC 107F after the run
Motor 176F
9min 15s
154A peak
2245W Peak
26.39A avg
408W avg
1384mah consumed
47/21 gearing
GRP tires @ 100F 9.20PM
Protoform body
Eagletree V4
EC5 connectors
Acepow hardcase 5000mah

How strong is the viper motor compared to a feigao xl, or even the novak hv motors?

Thomas

snellemin 08.04.2011 05:05 PM

oooh good question. Racing against Novak HV a few times, I can say the Viper is a bit more powerful. A Feigao xl would be stronger for sure, but max rpm would limit you.

J57ltr 08.04.2011 05:11 PM

I wish I still had my Gauss meter.

snellemin 08.13.2011 06:51 PM

There are new rotors in the works. Different materials and different sizes.

snellemin 08.17.2011 06:14 PM

Yesterday I ran the motor again and result is FAIL! Mikes Hobby shop onroad track was used.

Runs too effin' hot man. 170F running half a pack is not exceptable. I had to ease on the brakes and throttle to get to 150F. Was like granny drivin' in loserville county. I had more fun driving a 1512 1400kv 4pole motor. Sensor board on the motor is toast as well. My son's 2 pole C50L 1800kv Hacker has more power/excelleration and runs way cooler. There was another Viper motor on the offroad track and that one also ran stupid hot.

slimthelineman 08.17.2011 11:17 PM

Eh that sucks. Personally I much prefer the four pole motors in the heavier/higher load vehicles. I do like the sensored motors but honestly the sensorless are just as good and a little more powerful IMO. On the other (left) hand you have been groomed by the fantastical powers of the neu motors soooooo. Good luck man hope you can find an application for your soon to be repaired brand newish motor.
