The 1717 is a nice motor for a 20 lb truck with 5th scale wheels. It's not crazy overpowered but it works very well.

The 1527 will fit. For 8s, I'd probably go with 1527/1Y 1250kv. You might also think about a 1717 (ebay xo-1) or a leopard 4092 (OSE has them in stock).

He's running them in series for 12s - so the total voltage seen by the esc was 37.8 volts = 3.15 volts/cell. If he had them fully charged at the outset, the problem is with the batteries.
