help with timing on a Medusa 36-60-2000 v2 -
07.16.2008, 02:17 AM
I have a Losi 8ight with:
-Esc: CC Mamba max
-Motor: Medusa 36-60-2000 v2
-Battery: Polyquest 4S 5000mah
-Gearing: 14/48
-CC BEC
-RCM battery tray and motormount
As the Medusa seems quite simular to the Neu, im woundering about the settings for the timing, should it be "0"? I now have it on default (10) and Punch control at (70) start power is default (Low)..... if i change the timing to 0, should i change something else? like punch control? start power?

I run my setups with timing at 0, increasing the timing increases performance with a brushless motor very little, but increases heat alot....its not a good trade off, punch control at 0 and in the Castle SW, I adjust the throttle curve instead of using the punch control

azjc: thanks for the reply, but what about "start power"? (I just tried to set timing to lowest (0) and all cogging went away)

I have start power low also...my Neu 1515/2.5d has all the power you might want, and I am thinking about adding a 2s pack in series with my 6s to give me me a 8s kick in the pants....

I just got my Medusa 36-50-3300 and the instructions (yes I always read them!) say for best efficiency, your esc should be setup with 8-10 degrees advanced. Thoughts?

It's funny that you mention that because tow weeks ago I was racing with my 60mm 1300 with unknown ESC settings in my 8ight truggy. It ran great and cool all day and I won the sportsman A-main. When I checked the settings later that week my motor timing was set to 10, punch 30%, and everything else to the lowest. I changed the timing back to zero and went to practice at the same track. I was seeing temps on avgerage about 5-15 degrees hotter than before, but driving it felt the same. It was a different day and I can't say if the ambient temps were the same but it made me think, is a little timing ok? It definitely did not hurt my runtime. I was running a Hyperion 6s 4250 18c pack, it was a 12min main, no warm up laps, just drove over the loop to register and then sat by the grid. After the race I charged my pack and put 2390mah back in. I think I'll put it back to 10 and see what it does tomorrow, another race, same track.

Interesting find for sure. It would be nice to see it experimented with more to verify the results.

My Lehners seem to run hotter when timing is 0 or 5 deg, cooler when 10 degree. I guess I will have to try them at 15 deg, that is timing used by Lehner for all their specs.

For timing, it's best to go with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Multi-pole motors like more timing than do inrunner 2 pole type motors.
There's really no comparison between the two in the timing realm.
What applies to one, doesn't necessarily apply to the other. It's not Apples to Apples.

Found this on Neu's website:
5) For most uses the low advance setting is best—motors have better efficiency. “Y” wind motors can use medium advance for a little more power or speed. “D” wind motors should always use low advance as there is no improvement with higher advance settings.
