5mm connectors

I was over mikes place last night - putting together some stuff and was wondering - Even with the 5.5mm connectors - the connectors are still not big enough to get both motor wires on. So what is the difference between running the 2 wires to each plug ( besides resistance) - or soldering the 2 wires together extremely close to the speed controller and soldering one wire to the motor. Like this

The wires are going to be 3.5 inches long at most. It seems like a connection that was 3.5 would get you the same result in this case ( short connection wires )
