Ofna Spider Center vs front rear diffs - 08.19.2008, 01:43 AM

So I am trying to find some Ofna 8 gear diffs (4) and was wondering if there is any difference between the center diff and the front/rear diff besides the gear bolted to it... can you get a front/rear gear an put it on a center diff and vice versa? Can't seem to find specs anywhere.

Thanks.

From my experience they are the same, give or take a shim (custom shimming is generally a good idea anyways).

The center diff outdrives will have flat spots for the brake pads, but if your not using mech brakes you won't need to worry about it.

Ah, good point. Totally slipped my mind. But as mentioned, the flat spots will work in the front/rear as well.

I was just noticing that front and rear diffs are rare, centers are a plenty... buying the gear isn't cheap, so it might not make sense to convert.

Why are you trying to go with 8 gear diffs? What's the difference?

They are the same. The only thing different are the drive cups. I have 6, 8 front diff and also center.

I guess the theory is that the torque is distributed over the surface area (faces of the spider gears) of 8 gears instead of 6 or 4, making it stronger and less likely to shear or break a pin.

George16... my only question: Will I have to put different pinions in (3905 E-maxx or Jammin buggy)? I know you have done a lot with gears...

And I found them at Dinball for $56 a piece (Front/Rear)... posted on the good deal thread.

They do have al cups and 6 screws holding the spur/crown gear on. They will be stronger, but weigh more. Not really needed for a buggy...IMO!

How about a 3905 with 6S and a Neu 1515?

Yes. It all depends on what final gearing you want to run.
