I have plans to do a dual outrunner direct to diff setup on a 1/5 scale car. I will have to use 2 esc, but I can basically mount the outrunner shaft directly to the pinion gear. So it will open up the center of the chassis to allow all of the componets (batteries, escs, etc) to be mounted right on the center line.

Ditto on what the pimp said. I was thinking about doing something like this in a Baja but there would just be a ton of unsprung weight and it is too complicated/expensive to be worth it IMO. 4x MMM, 4x 6s Lipo, 4x Motor = $$$$. If I was to build a crawler (without any real knowledge of crawlers) I'd maybe give it a shot and have some system set up where I can power any of the wheels individually on demand, would make kind of a cool traction system.
