I would say a 12-14t John. That sould give you a good range of speeds through the mid to upper 30's possibly into the low 40's

I just installed a medusa 36-60-1600 in my losi 8t about a week ago. I am running it on 4s 6000 pack. I do not have alot of experience with different motors but I was running a nemisis xlt motor before this. This motor has plenty of power and seems to have just as much torqe and speed if not more then the nemisis. Raced a 20 min main this past weekend and temps came in at 135/motor-114/esc-95/battery. I am liking this motor so far.

Right at 11 lbs. I think it was 10 lbs 11 ozs. I will take some pics of my setup and some vids when I get a chance.

I am preparing to convert HB Lightning Pro Evo buggy. I want to use MMM ESC, Medusa MR-036-060-XXXXV2-5 motor and A123 cells.

I think about lighter setup. My track is rather short. Buggy does not have to be ballistic. 10 min runtime is enough.

I want to use 6S1P A123 cells. 6 cells fit chassis nicely, are light and can be charged as one pack with my Hyperion. 1600kv motor will not need as much current as 2000kv. Around 30 k rpm was enough for me in my brushless 1/8 stadium truck. Moreover 4 pole motors like to be overgeared.

What do you think about this setup (1600kv, 6S1P A123, 31 680rpm)?

This may sound stup[ic but I was having a similar problem and I was advised to gear up not down. It seemed to help.

Is the ESC running very cool. (that is why they advised me it may be geared to low)

With your goal to lighten the buggy, I wonder if a 36-50 motor woundn't be enough. Since your not going for incredible top speeds, or crazy long runtimes a 6s seems overkill to me as well.

Your plan sounds fine but seems contradictory to your goal.

I have a heavy mostly alloy HPI NMT(very close in size to an 1/8scale buggy) that does close to 50mph for 10 min on a Hacker C40-8L and 4s A123's.



My Emaxx does 42MPH through grass for close to 10min on 5s A123's and MR36-50-3300v2



I think you can meet your performance goals and reduce weight even further!

What do you suggest? 50-3300 @ 5S or 50-2200 @ 6S

Well just to make sure I was thinking right I just did two back to back runs on my E-maxx one with the Medusa 36-50-3300 and one with my Neu 1512/2.5D both on 5s A123. The Medusa was running a 15t pinion 68t spur, the Neu on a 24t pinion and 68t spur. Both setups show 33mph on the Top speed calc @scriptasylum.com.

As for driving the Medusa felt a touch faster and maybe a bit quicker off the line, the Neu felt like it had a bit more midrange torque, better for racing?? or too much maybe?

I plan to move the Medusa to my EMT now, still on 4s(fits the truck well) and this should be a nice setup I think, and kind of what I think I would do with an 1/8 scale buggy if I was going to race at less then ballistic speeds. I'll do some more swapping around and see how the Medusa does on 4s in the truggy.

I'll post back with some data later tonight.

Need to mod my motor mount for the Medusa, might not get to it tonight.

No problem! This was a comparison that I was very interested in myself. I was amazed that the two motors were so closely matched. But it does appear if you want to save weight go with a high quality smaller motor with higher Kv and gear down a bit.


The only thing I still worry about is weather or not the bearings will fail early with such high RPM (45+k). I have a few hours on it though and it runs as well as it ever did

My other concern are motor temperatures. I think longer can and lower kv will run much cooler.
