I assume the car controllers have more fets, or better ones, etc.... for the same amp rating.

I know Shawn has said that the Mamba25 for example, is built way "tougher" than a Phoenix 25.

When they first started into the Mamba project they thought they could just take a plane controller and play with the firmware to make it car-friendly, but they quickly found out the hardware wasn't even close to good enough when put in a MiniT. So the Mamba25 is "overrated" compared to their own plane stuff.

Maybe Joe can tell us how different the guts are....

That makes sense in a way since current in a car is quite peaky. OK, so a few more FETs and maybe some heavier circuit traces. Then add new firmware. Still seems a little unbalanced price-wise.

A perfect example is the Quark 125B. There is the air version that is quite a bit cheaper than the car version, but both look exactly alike. I wonder what the inside of the air one looks like...

I think its because the industry hasn't settled down. If you look at the rc planes, most things are standardized, as is pricing. I know when i go to the local plane shop i can get plane stuff (wire plugs ect.) and pay about half what i would going to an RC car place, Planes have been around for 40+years RC car have been around for only 35 Years, about 25 years real hot and heavy and still going through growing pains and expansion. We are still doing different things where almost all has been done with planes and most have settled and standardized. If things were standardized in our neck of the woods (plugs, Taps batteries ect.) it would be cheaper to

Yeah, i can't put my finger on it.. I don't think they run different fetts or less.. Besides, the price difference between 32 or 64 fetts when bought in large quantities is about 16 bucks.. the 125A air controller of quark can do 300A for 10 seconds.and so is the car version.. there goes that theory.. and since this very same fetts are also used for brakes, this doesn't justify the difference in price either.. the only difference is software.

The Mamba Monster Max reminds me of Micro Soft's XBox game console. At the time the Sony Playstation 2 was released, the XBox claimed to be 2 times as powerful as the PS2. However, the PS2 had more game titles than the XBox and till this day, its among the best game consoles in the world.

I wonder if Sony would be interested in designing an electronic speed controller for brushless motors and call it RC Station..

Back on topic, lol....

I agree the prices of car/plane stuff is out of balance.

I would think part of it is related to R&D costs. This excuse doesn't always fly, but I'm sure it's ture in some cases... more time and effort in designing them. And there must be more costs on the back-end also, in warranty claims etc.

Heck, look at Hacker... they finally just gave up on designing a new car line. They either:
1. couldn't build it good enough
2. didn't think there was a big enough market for it, or
3. they were afraid of having a mess of blown up product like the original hacker car escs.

My primary system is a maxcim N32 airplane controller. I have always used this system in my MT's etc and it works great although I do use a oneway and mechanical breaks so any issues with partial throttle/glitching are absorbed by the oneway.

Perhaps it is the ensurance to pay for a good service on a car ESC.. i think the car escs burn down more than the ones used in planes..

Simply because the ones used in planes are most of the time floating and air is cooling them from everywhere. Not to mention that they are powering a motor which is not working so hard( no high resistence), just the propeller moving the air around.
