Yeah, you must have one of the newer versions. My jato has one of the first MMs and it ran 14 cells once (until the tires blew up).

I hooked up 16 cells to it to bench test it, seemed to work reasonably well, though there was no driving load on it.

This was no load either. Just the motor no pinion.

I have question too.
Is newer MambaMax different from old ones? I mean maybe newer ESC is works better on higher voltages not so hot and etc?
I am plan to buy MambaMax for my 5S setup becouse my 100A plane ESC have realy bad throttle responce, not so good for Race. Allmost impossible control car in air

This is the problem I just ran into. My MM is around 3 years old and can't run 14 cells at 16.8 volts. Isn't a 5s 18.5 volts?

How do you have a 3yo MM when they came out a year ago ? lol.
14 cells will peak at ~20V, 5S 21V.
If they built over volt protection into the new escs I'm going to be really disappointed...

The Mamba Max last year? I bought a MM esc with A 7700kv motor as a set from my lhs almost a year before hurricane Katrina, which makes it 3 years ago.
Edit: The owner told me that one of his former employees works at Castle. Did I get some kind of deal and didn't know it?

I have 2 generations of MambaMax (different FET's) and so far have not seen any limits.
But with time capacitors are loosing their properties making ESC more sensitive to voltage spikes.
And knowing that MambaMax capacitors are not rated for bigger motors, makes perfect sense that some ESC more or less sensitive to higher voltage due to the variation in capacitors parameters from batch to batch...

You could try replacing the three caps on it. From Griffin's post, it seems like it should help.

cant see how it would help its powering up and arming just not evern trying to turn the motor i think CC must have put some protection on the controllers to stop people runing 5s as my controller is only a couple of months old

Damn I am realy confused now. I dont know what to do :(. I can buy new MM $120 with free shipping but now they are out of stock and seller promised that it will be on stock within week, this means what MM will be new, directly from factory :(. I thought make a MM upgrade to run with new caps and heatsinks and use mechanical brake.
