Welcome Z06jim,

Since the pads are keyed to the spur and not the plates you could try almost any spur and pads you like that have the pads keyed to the spur.

I personally would not consider running without slip,i'd just find one that works.

What diameter is the top shaft?,perhaps there is a better spur and pads that is a direct fit.

If you have access to, or know someone with a lathe, you could make any spur fit perfectly by either boring it out till it fits your bushing or making a teflon bushing to fit.(takes about 2 mins)This would get it spinning perfectly true.

Are you sure the gear mesh wasn't too tight?Maybe the stock slipper and spur is good.

Oh yeah,and also the diameter of the slipper plates?
