Nah, formatting it would be absolute last resort for me- unless you have all of your files backed up somewhere, then just do it. See if the disk utilities help at all, maybe even call the tech support people. It may be a corrupt MBR, or firmware since you're getting connection errors and can't actually play anything.

EDIT: Oops I though this was a HDD... Yeah MP3 player... of course you have the files backed up. I'd erase it and revert to the default settings, reload a few tracks to make sure it's OK.
