Need some motor advice!!!! - 01.12.2009, 12:32 AM

I bought my fiance a 3905 MAXX for Christmas and she loves it. We went bashing today and she loves the fact that it is a do-all go over anything truck. I was thinking about getting her an MMM like I have in my E Revo. The only complaint she does have is she goes through NiMH packs like crazy. As far as runtimes go she gets about 15-20 minutes on a pair and she sees me going for 45 minutes on my lipos. So, that is when
I though about upgrading her truck to brushless too. What is a good motor to add to it?
-First things first is she does not care about speed. She can go 20mph and be perfectly happy. So a fast motor is not needed.
-She just wants longer runtime. I know longer runtime will come naturally when the upgrade to lipos is made but I want some suggestions from some of the experts.
-We will be sharing lipos so I need a motor that will run 4S and 6S.

Thank you for your help.

Since speed isn't a concern, you can gear it for about 30-35mph, run a smaller motor, and get great runtimes due to low amp draw. I would say for an inexpensive setup get something like a Medusa 36-60-2000 and a MM/UBEC to use with 4s. For 6s the obvious choice is a MMM, and maybe a Medusa 36-60-1600.

MMM combo is most likely your best bet and best bang for the buck! It'll push that truck without a problem on 4-6s but for best run time no matter what batteries gear it down if she's not concerned with speed as much. 4s is more ideal for it but it can be safely ran on 6s, it'll just be a missile! If speed isn't a concern gear it for low 30's and she should get plenty of run time with a decent set of lipos.

P.S. Congrats on getting your fiance into the hobby, if she enjoys it she'll understand it when you spend all your wedding money on it! LOL

I'd have to say a Medusa 36/60/2000 on 4s with a Mamba Max with a bec and a cap. that setup geared 24/58 would get you to about 30mph.

And for batteries I would recommend two of these: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...0C_Lipoly_Pack

If you do end up with a MM or MMM, turn the punch control way up, and start power down. That'll help reduce the big runtime-robbing amp spikes on take-off, and it'll help the life of the drive line as well.

I have had her interested in it for a while. I bought her an XL-5 Stampede, converted it to VXL, then she said she wanted something 4-wheel drive so I sold all my 2 wheel drive vehicles(2 XL-5 Rustys, VXL Rusty,VXL Pede) and bought her an Emaxx. She likes the hobby and she knows I dump butt loads of money into it so she bought me a gift card to Hobbytown for Christmas.

As far as a motor, I am trying to keep it as inexpensive as possible. So the Medusa seems to be the best bet so far.

Have you considered getting the Kershaw Designs 700HO conversion? The single 700 conversion has about the same speed as stock but more torque and can be used with the stock ESC. You'll need a LVA (Low Voltage Alarm) for the lipos, but the stock ESC will run on 4s lipo. When it inevitably fries you can adapt a MM to run on 4s and continue to use that brushed motor. The 60mm Medusa is a good motor if you want to go BL, but the 700HO will do fine and are very cheap.

All I ever wanted was an honest weeks pay for an honest days work.

If I get a Brushless ESC I am going to get a Brushless motor at the same time. A friend of mine has the 700 HO in his 3905 and he is unhappy with the results that it has given him.

Ahh. If that's the case the 60mm MedUsa on 4s lipo should be just fine.

The 60mm Medusa would get the job done but the 70mm is only a couple bucks more if you go with Medusa. I would go with the 70mm so when she's ready for some more speed you can gear it up without worrying about heat so much. However if you need an esc as well I really think the MMM combo is the way to go. By the time you set a MM up for 4s, with a bec and fan, your pretty much at the cost of a MMM and if you want the ability to go 6s the MMM is the cheapest way to go. Then when it comes down to it the combo will cost less than a MMM and a 70mm Medusa. She'll have a top notch esc and motor that should provide plenty of fun for a long time, and if there's a problem with either we all know Castle will back it up! It's your choice but now that the combos are available, it'd be my choice!

I might just have to do that. Looking at your avatar looks just like my E Revo. Maximizer Beadlocks, 17mm Conversion with Badlands. Mine has MMM v2 with a Neu 1515/1Y/S. The only difference is I have Maxamps stickers and Futaba 2.4 FASST Stickers on the side of mine.

by the time you but that motor ($120 with shipping) and a mm ($120) and bec ($25)...thats $265

you can get the MMM for $290 shipped from mike you have a MUCH MUCH better system for $25 more than that MM system and a ton less soldering....imho

I would say that your best bet would be to get the castle combo! Oh I was unhappy with the 700ho too. Very slow(27mph tops) and only lasted about 10 runs before the performance dropped to 23mph, then about 5 to 7 runs layer it dropped to 20mph. I cleaned the motor after every run and lubed the com??? I used to race 1/10 scale so I know how to maintace a motor but this one wouldnt last no ,atter what I did.(all on 4s lipos too) The motor would hit over 200*f in a matter of mins. I get about 25mins of really hard driving out of the castle combo(geared for 39mph) with a set of 8000s and the motor stays about 125*F the whole time!
