First one has its benefits as well.

I build battery housing to be strong, to protect future LiPo cells. So, yes it does come in contact with ground but nothing to worry. That how it looks after 10+ runs
I built it from 3 parts, if you do the same as one, then you can level battery cover with f/r skidplates. But if you worry about ground clearance then my first setup would be better.

P.S. Try to put 6 cells between front and rear skid plates. You will get better picture of what I am talking.
