Anyone have a dreamcast... -
04.30.2009, 10:03 PM
...and have any experience downloading the iso game files and playing them on the console? I downloaded the file parts, expanded them with winrar and burned them to a disk. It will not play, and I have a feeling that I need some sort of boot files or something... I just used std burning software, and most suggest alcohol 120% to do the burning.. Not sure why but I have a feeling it may help?
I am currently searching emuparadise forums, but my computer experience is below novice, more like tard.

my understanding was there was a disc you had to load to use burnt games. basically a pre disk... disk. also make sure you burnt a iso not a data disc. i have no way to verify if this works http://dreamcast-talk.com/utopia.php

I will give that a try... Now for some reason my pc will not burn disks, or even pick them up.

an iso is an image file, so you have to burn it differently than a regular file, which is why you need a special application. I personally use ImgBurn on windows. you just open it, and click burn image to disc, choose the file and wait. that is just my preference, but anything like alcohol or nero would work for burning. I don't know much about the dreamcast, but most consoles have some sort of copy protection feature so that you cannot do exactly what you want to do.
As for the burner, it could be a dirty lens. I find that to be the case, especially with slot loading drives and laptop drives. Most stores that sell blank CDs have a cd/dvd lens cleaner, which is a special cd with little brushes on it.
Also, do you still have the soggy ps2? I've fixed my share of 'em. usually its just sony's overengineering at fault with the whole laser assembly on a big motorized tiltythingy. every PS2 ive fixed that was the problem and it just needed to be re-adjusted to read the discs again.

Good info... I downloaded alcohol and I will give it a try tomorrow with the work pc. I just had some work do on this one, so that may be causing issues with the dvd-r drive.
I wish I had the dead ps2... It got tossed with the rest of his house (ouch). I may have a buddy who can lend me one for testing (hehehe). He owes me big time!
Supposedly the iso files from emuparadise have the boot info built in, but I am not sure. I will give the whole deal a whirl again tomorrow...

I never had a Dreamcast, but I know for my PSP, all I have to do is put the .iso directly onto the memory card. Of course on the PSP that requires custom firmware, but if I remember right, my friend told me all you have to do is burn it directly to the cd, so I'm guessing just try and burn the .iso without extracting it. He's not the most computer savy and has no problems whatsoever, so it shouldn't be to difficult.

Most likely the fact I used std burning software to do it, instead of the alcohol or similar software.
I will give it a try tomorrow, may even take a tv to work so that I can test the results as I go. Only issue is that the smallest tv I have is 27". HAHAHA.

I figured it out, you have to use a program such as alcohol to get it burned correctly...
Did that and I am playing Tony Hawk 2 as we speak!

I remember when a friend of mine got a Dreamcast when it came out, and I would spend hours playing Soul Caliber...I loved that game! Now I play it on XBox.
