The solder points for the motor and power wires are exposed on the bottom of the ESC, so something may have touched the battery connections at least partially shorting it out. Could also be an ESC failure where the FET(s) locked "on". Could be a partially/fully demagged motor which causes lots of current to flow.

In other words, there are a lot of possibilities. The cogging you describe sounds like a motor or ESC issue. If you have a different motor, I would try that first.
