Possible to get bigger spurs? - 08.20.2009, 08:51 AM

Is it possible to get bigger size spurs for the Slipperential? I would love to get one but I can't use the smaller spurs that come with it.

The Caster F8T truggy has a stock spur size of 62T. The F/R diffs are geared at 43/13 which is already higher than most truggies. As it is I'm already going to have to gear 62/12 with a 1700kv motor. With a 50T spur on the Slipperential there's no way I could gear the vehicle properly.

50t is the largest spur we make for the Slipperential - can work fine on the Caster truggy with a 1700Kv motor (12t pinion with 50t spur on 5s with a 1700Kv motor and truggy tires calculates to right about 40mph). Caster also makes a 10/46 ring/pinion setyup for their truggy and buggy I think.

You know you're exactly right. I ran through the numbers again on the speed calc and they came out fine. Somehow I must have screwed something up before, not sure where I went wrong though.

I looked on the Caster site but their web-store seems to be pretty incomplete right now. I'll have to give them a call and see about the 10/43, but I think the 13/43 will work fine.

I don't know, I'm a little unsure now. I ordered it with the 50T spur. When I went and looked at the F8T motor mount it looks like the screw slots will have to be lengthened to allow the motor to be moved over enough to mesh properly. Hopefully won't have to do that, but if it is necessary it's a simple mod to do. Only other thing might be shimming to get the Slipperential to fit in the diff mount, but that's also simple.

Mike do you have any confirmation of test fitting this on an F8T, or were you just saying it's possible to set up proper gearing?

I am not familiar with the Caster motor mount, but the Slipperential will drop right into the center diff area (same size as the stock diff from bearing to bearing). The motor screw slot length would be the determining factor(in other words, it will work no problem, but gearing opportunities will be limited by the caster motor mount). My mugen motor mount with the caster shims would work perfectly on the Caster truggy. :)

OK well let me do a test fit when the Slipperential gets here, and I'll go from there. There's a good chance the motor screw slots will just need to be extended a bit. Not that I don't like supporting RCM, but I'd rather use the stock mount if the required mods are minimal. If it looks like it's going to be a big job to make it work then I'll look at getting the Mugen mount.

I haven't even installed the hybrid diffs in my E-revo yet and now I'm going to have this to do!!! Oh well, the long MI winters afford me plenty of time for that stuff. Don't want to have the cars all ripped apart while it's still nice driving weather.

EDIT: Here are both the Caster pro mount and RCM Mugen mount to compare. I think the Mugen would work on the F8T like Mike said, but the screw slots don't seem any longer, so they both might require modification. I'll report back once the Slipperential arrives. Thanks for the help Mike!

Just an update: Caster does offer what they call the "Small Gear Conversion Kit" for the F8T. It comes with a 54T center spur, two 43T ring gears, and two 10T diff pinions. The downside is the cost, at $74 it's a little pricey.

Now the truggy has a 62T stock center spur, and the Fusion buggy uses a 46T. The question is do they both use the same motor mount? If they do then the 50T Slipperential spur should cause no issues, but if the buggy needs a different motor mount to use a 46T spur then I'll have to use that or possibly the Mugen mount. I'm waiting to hear back from Caster and I'll report back on what they say.
