MMM problems - 11.05.2009, 03:40 AM

Hi all,

I'm somewhat a newbie to RC so bear with me. I have been having a problem with my Momba Monster setup. I currently have a v3 MMM esc and an equvlient motor to the one that comes with the e-revo BE, I am running a 5s lipo 30c 4000mAH (Eagle Power). This is installed on a Cen Matrix TR FRE, brushless converted with the rc monster motor mount. I recently destroied my second motor (pics below) the first one i was running 11/66 or 62 cant remember whatever comes stock on a the truggy. The second time I was running 11/52 motor temps were good and esc fan would never come on, also i was running with the body off, so airflow was not a problem. I mostly us the truggy for bashing and was planning to start taking it to the track but am now getting very frustrated... any help would be very much appreciated.
thanks in advance.

-Justin

Guess that motor isn't equivalent. You blew the rotor. It didn't stand up to the RPM requirements.

Try a genuine motor next time. Castle/Neu or Neu.

Trying to save a few bucks can cost a lot in the long run....

I was gonna say, when you say 'eqivalent motor', did you mean just a normal black cc2200kv traxxas version, but then I realised that the castle made motors (for traxxas and hpi) dont have wrapped rotors...

HiMark? Nice looking ripoff at best- shame its in China as Castle cant persue copyright infringement. Worrying really as there is a knockoff MMpro/ MMM type esc doing the rounds too (link to a site selling them in Germany floating around here some place..).

Stick with known brands that, if not great (feigao), are atleast predictable and easy to get to work in a certain application (by gearing down & adding a heatsink/clamp etc)...

What motor would you suggest I buy for my application? I have no clue when it comes to this stuff, and what gearing would you suggest? Is the battery ok to use or should i go with a different one?
Thanks

What motor is that? totally different from Castle's except the cooling fins. No kevlar wrapping, carbon instead. The magnet doesn't look like neodymium neither. Stator/windings/leads/screws also differ. Same size bearing though.

Are you sure about that? so how could those black motors handle the monster abuse in E-REVO BL and Savage Flux ?

....What a Blue Sky....

Pat can answer than one- they might be wrapped with kevlar actually, but they definately arent wrapped with carbon.. of gaffer tape, whatever that black stuff is...

As for what motor to buy; an official castleneu 2200kv one ofcourse- same size as the copy, but much more powerful and better quality. As for not knowing what to use- thats what forums are for = seek and ye shall find (an answer), or ask and ye shall receive (helpful info).

Sorry Neil,

The Castle made motors have Kevlar wrapped rotors.

Either a MMM 2200 Kv or 2650 Kv motor will work great in your application. I usutally point people towards the 2200 has a much wider power range as is more powerful than the 2650.

Our customers have explained why there is no MMM/Neu motor "equivalent" and trying to saving a few bucks at this power level can be very expensive.

They quoted the CC website in their ad. The part about the ESC is fine but I think it was wrong of them to put the motor part in there since it doesn't come with the real CC motor. I think it would be easy for a less educated shopper to purchase that system, and, when it fails, assume that CC makes poor quality motors.

Indeed, the wording of the advert is very misleading, or confusing at best:

It's always better to simply reduce the heat generated in a system by better engineering than to try and cool things with fans and other gimmicks. They say that the castle motors are "on the way", but then dont make it clear that the included ones arent actual castle motors... not cool.

And the price of $398 for a $170-200 esc and $60-80 is insane, thats just obscene.

On a side note- some awesome stuff coming out of korea for r/c lately, especially crawlers
