I have mine geared a bit higher, and even on Smart Sense it would cog in the mid-range pretty badly if given enough throttle quick enough. Maybe it's because it has switched over to sensorless at that point and there's not enough back-EMF with the load?
In sensored only mode there is no cogging at all but the motor ran hotter... gotta love dynamic timing.

How many Cells are you running?

What temps are you seeing on the motor?
