I found what the problem was. I use the stock TQ3 radio that comes with the T/E-Maxx, and I had the trigger (throttle) set to 70/30 - ie. 70% of throttle movement was for forward motion, and 30% was backwards. I changed it to 50/50, and it sorted the problem out. I've know got much stronger breaks and a quicker reversing speed, only less control for forward motion.
Guess I need to get a better radio sometime - more $$$ :002:

Now that you have the setting at 50/50, you might be able to get a bit more control in forward by turning the throttle trim all the way. It's really not supposed to be used that way, but it'll give a bit more control until you get a new radio...
