My Savage Truggy Project!

So, the mill just came in the mail today. Still have to get it set up and am waiting on the steppers/controller and such. My schedule is pretty free this next week so I hope to make decent headway into the world of CNC machining and get this thing started shortly after that. And as for the motor mount, I'm probably going to be making my own now, seeing as it wont really cost me much at all, and I can do what I really want with everything. I have to buy a new CAD program though as my Solidworks license just expired :( So it'll be a little while before I can show you guys what I'm doing. Not a big update really, just thought I'd let you guys know whats going on.

Man, I can't wait until I get my CNC Machine (and of course, learn how to use it)...I will be making parts like mad, because I have access to unlimited Delrin scraps of all sizes, aluminum scraps of various sizes and types (6061 & 7075, both T6 Temper), titanium scraps of limited sizes, and carbon-fiber of my own, which I will just do the right thing and drop a load of cash on a bulk order of CF!

This looks like a great idea. Please keep the drawings as you should possibly think about getting this manufactured if it works out well. Will def keep savage owners excited. I like this idea a lot!!! MAKE ME ONE :)

thzero - No pics of the Shock Towers, my Solidworks License expired so I can't really do/show any of my work right now. I'm going to be ordering the 2010 program/license by the end of the week hopefully, so soon enough I can post everything for you guys to see.

Chadworkz - Good luck on your purchase, it definitely is a whole hobby in itself though, it's hard for me not to get in over my head with this thing, so much information, not enough brainpower.

mckrill - Thanks for the kind words, I have been following your 14s project and it is just simply amazing. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Jahay - After I get my own produced and perfected, shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Anyways, as far as updates go, I'm having a bunch of aluminum stock (6061, 7075) as well as some Delrin coming in the mail this week so I can be prepared to machine this out once I learn how to use CAM and get my CAD up and running. I made some test cuts with my mill just for fun yesterday too, it's just crazy watching this thing go!

Well, thanks to all of the classes I had to take for my degrees, I have quite a few that are needed, or will at least help, that should help when designing and then machining...CAD, DAC (part of CAD), Prototyping, Fast Prototyping, Strength of Materials, Drafting, Computer Drafting, all of the Civil & Mechanical Engineering classes, as well as all of the computer classes. Well, at least I hope it helps, and I hope I remember it all. CAD was still on Release-13 when I was in school!

Just posting here to let you guys know that I haven't forgot about this project. I just got a job at a machine shop so my time has been/is going to be limited, but I'm still working on this thing! I'm actually putting 2 smaller projects before it though, as they are less complex and will help me learn my way around everything before I mess up a huge chassis plate. You'll see them on here soon ;) I'll post up the completed drawings for this project by this weekend to tide you guys over for now, sorry for the slow progress :/

Anyways, still some refining to do but all it is is some chamfering/hole making/fileting.. the easy stuff, to make it look pretty and to piece it together.

Just the Chassis

Nice!!! Just keep us updated! i still like the idea of this chassis.... I can see why no one has really attempted it now... Its quite complex.

I was looking at the designs and notcied that you are going to have problems utilising the stock steering assembly unless you use one out of another car which has a flat chassis.

Also how are you going to mount the motor?
1.To the side of the centre diff to keep the LCG?
or
2.mount it above like using the universal diff/motor mount in the RCM Store?

I vote 1. for Low centre gravity reasons. Otherwise what the point in making a chassis like this.

I can see the slots in the chassis for the motor mount- to the left and infront of the CD, as you look at the image.

there is nothing attaching the steering assembly to the top of the side of the chassis

You can see the holes on the chassis up front, surrounded by a little bit of circular material, where I assume he is going to install a two-post bellcrank style servo-saver/steering assembly. A UE GenIV SS would be awesome there!

You can also see the 4 slotted holes in the chassis where he will mount the motor using a full-can motor-mount, like the Tekno conversion mount.
