Maybe the motor has shifted. Do you have a CC motor? If so, you might have twisted the motor and the spikes are hitting the chassis which will warp the pitch of the motor itself, and the pinion might hit the spur sideways. Check from the sides and check that it lines up correctly.

The screw on the pinion gear might have gotten loose..
