Someone offered to buy my website... -
07.20.2011, 04:47 PM
I just got an offer for $2000 to buy my domain and content. Hmmm, pretty tempting given the economy these days. I think I'll hold out for more before I cave.
I'd imagine that the new owner will either remove all content, or start charging for its use (like the R/C Calc site) - either way, it's not what the current site is about. Before I make any final decisions, I'll let you all know so that you can download the latest ZIP file.

Thanks Brian for all the r/c calcs you have given us. It has been as useful as any tool I own. I would keep it for now...just my 2 cents worth

I would keep it. As many hits as it gets I would ask for a higher dollar amount if you do think about selling.

Not to worry, after looking at various sites that estimate worth, it seems it could conceivably go for $3500 on the low end to as high as $25k. I would "settle" for ~$8k I think.
Seriously, I don't know how these sites can estimate something like that. $25k??? How the heck could that even be possible? Even if they used page views as a guide, that's only because the content is free. If people had to pay for it, there would be FAR fewer visits.

website worth is usually based on hits, because that's what generates ad revenue. congrats on the offer, but for a website of this caliber (hits) it's worth more than 2 grand.

Any restrictions on setting up a new site and or content.
If not then why not take it. The new domain will cost what $10

Might want to call Maxamps and see if they want to buy some ad space.
Lure them in with a promise of a "lipo pack calculator" then just have said tool suggest a 2p configuration of MA's largest capacity cell no matter what vehicle parameters are chosen.
Pretty sure any of their cells will meet up to the specs if you use them in 2p...

I thought about putting up ads on the site, but really don't know where to start/who to contact. It woukd be nice to have a small source of revenue, if only to offset operating costs. Maybe I'll do some research on this. Anyone have experience on this?
As far as the current offer goes, it sounds like they would buy, and therefore own, all the materials as well as the domain. So I doubt I could simply move everything to a new server without violating some copyright thing.

Lol, I doubt that with my previous experience with them that they would go for it. And I wouldn't be able to honestly build a lipo calc for their products because A) I've only had poor experience with their old product line, and B) I don't have any idea about the performance of their current stuff... other than my opinion that they are overpriced for even the performance they claim.

Maybe you should make the donation button more visible? I was about to suggest that you added one but decided to look around a bit before I did and discovered that there was one under the FAQ section.
I would think that most, myself included, use your awesome tools and never bother too look around on the other pages.
As soon as my next paycheck comes in I'll donate. I use your page frequently and great stuff like this needs to be supported.

Is it too nosey to ask who made the offer? They must be a business savvy company to realize how beneficial your site is to the rc community.

Google Adsense is one option, it lets you choose the size, shape & position of the ads and where they are placed on your site so they arent obtrusive as such; thought about it myself but never really looked into the specifics too deeply ( hurrah for philanthropy ).
