When I taped my truggy's proline VTR rims I only used 1.5" width tape. This is for truggy rims though which are are about 2x as wide.
It doesn't take much to keep the tire from balooning. A good 1" strip down the centerline of the tire will prevent the tire from ballooning very well.
For a 1/8th rim I'd say a 3/4" would be perfect. And you could do a 1" carefully. As posted above me you don't want the tape to be on the sidewalls of the tires at all. It'll cause issues.
