Unless you have a "thermofinger", you won't know the temperature simply by touching it. 180 degrees is very hot to the touch. Water simmers at 190 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. The IR thermometer is a good idea. It is normal for the motor to get pretty hot during hard running.
