If you are running one servo(steering-no shift servo), you could get away without using a UBEC or receiver pack with 14 cells. I wouldn't run 16 cells on a basic xl3100 (the motor could take it, but it will draw some power/amps and will be pretty hard on parts). The xl3100 is a nice 10-14 cell motor.
