I run Spysweeper and Norton 360 and I am crap free..... ...and I hear you about the sharing sites...and MySpace being the worst...the computer my daughter uses is loaded with crap and I have told her to stop going to the sites, I would spend lots of time cleaning up that computer but I am tired of wasting my time and now it is very slow and she has been told when the computer crashes she can go to the library to use a computer...I wont buy another one

Just hand her the OS CD and tell her to have fun! Reloading an OS, drivers, and all the apps will teach her a lesson.

I did the same. I got tired of trying to explain that computers dont just break on their own, and that the sites she visits are often where she picked up the "junk" that continually killed it. So for graduation she got a new laptop. After she opened it, I handed her the paperwork (included a 3 year warranty), and told her to call them, not me. Problem solved!

Do you honestly think a teenager would take the time to read something like that? She refused to look at her owners manual for an entire week until she realized I was serious that I wasnt going to have anything to with her new one (less paying for it of course!).

Then I think she will really end up in the library, either because PC got screwed or she doesnt want to start rebuilding it

Well, then she doesn't get her PC back, and she is forbidden from using other computers even at the library (unless it's strictly for homework). Pretty simple to me. One time of going through the process will teach her to be a little more conscientious about what she downloads/installs, and how to maintain it. Harsh lessons are the best ones, and are the ones I favor for my kids. No need to yell, threaten, spank, etc.

Internet Explorer has posed no problems for me. In fact I'm still running IE6 on my XP computer because that XP copy is non-legit...
Then IE7 is on my laptop. I have Firefox installed on both computers, but I just prefer the simplicity of IE7 to Firefox for some reason.

I think it is all user preference at the end of the day it will all depend on the site we visit and how much much we maintain our system (for those newer and smarter worms or spywares).

For what it’s worth:
I've got my mane computer as the home server and all of the other computers go thought it, that way i block the sites i don’t want the kids or the wife on . Dad does all of the maintenance on the server (my computer) = no issues at all on theirs
Worth a try (?)

At home, I have a small home network, so I use a router/switch. The seperation from WAN and LAN helps (don't forget to change the default router password). Then, I run ZoneAlarm firewall, AVG Fee A/V, Spybot, and Adaware spyware programs.

There is an easy way around running IE7 on a non-legit XP installation.
I too have FF, but use IE more. It just loads faster and I'm lazy.

As does mine on my Vista laptop. It loads up faster than Firefox.

Sheesh, talk about old hardware; I use an Athlon64 single-core (socket 754 IIRC) 2.2GHz CPU, 1GB PC3200 (I think) DDR Corsair RAM, dual 35BG Raptor drives in Raid0. Haven't reloaded XP in about 5-6 years now.
