Do LEDs Scratch LCD screens? - 06.03.2008, 07:40 PM

I'm trying to fabricate a touchscreen out of my 22" LCD screen using a method similar to Johnny Lee's WiiMote Whiteboard, except I'll be using a webcam since I don't have a Wii or a Wiimote or a BlueTooth adapter.

The infrared pen I've made will be activated by either putting pressure on the tip of the pen (such as touching it to the screen) or by pushing a button I've put on it. I like touching it to the screen better, but I'm not sure if it will put scratches on my glossy screen. The monitor is a Gateway HD2200, BTW, if that affects anything.
So, does anyone know if the tip of an LED (this one, to be exact) would scratch or harm the surface of an LCD monitor?

Thanx,
Brijar!!!

My lcd monitor looks an feels like it could easily be scratched. I'm tinking even if you didnt put big scratches in it from 1 swipe, over time it would proabbly not be good.

This is just my thoughts. No real info to base it on except looking at my lcd.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

put a screen protector on the monitor if you're going to be touching it with something a lot.

Ok, I may have changed my mind about touching it because it makes a very annoying squeaking noise when the LED touches it, though it doesn't appear to leave any kind of mark, other than the ripple effect. I think I'll just use a button on the pen to do the activating, which will make it much easier to make the pens, plus less possible damage to my monitor.

Thanx,
Brijar!!!

OK, I've got my webcam now, but I can't get the stupid infrared filter scratched off (it's a coating). I can't get inside the darned lens housing either. This is the camera I have.

If I can't get the infrared filter off, I'll just make a box touch pad rather than maping it to my monitor.

Anyone know of a good way to scrape the filter off? I've tried my fingernail, a paper towel, and some alcohol, but it is still there -.-
