BEC vs receiver pack

Hi,
I am running a Novak HV system and I am finding the internal BEC to not meet my power requirements. The easiest solution would seem for me to add a reciever pack. However I see that most folks here use a BEC. I understand that weight is a factor, and the hassle of charging another pack is a problem, but are there any other advantages to bec over a relatively fool proof rx pack?

I ask because the HV system has 2 battery inputs, so I went out and got 2-2s lipos for it. What a mess of wiring I would have if I wired the bec to 2 batteries, you know?

Other than the two disadvantages you noted, not that I can think of.

Most people grab power for the BEC right at the Deans connector, which can make wiring look a little messy. If you don't mind taking the ESC apart, you could solder those wires directly on the power input on the ESC. You can make wiring a bit cleaner that way.

Another advantage of the BEC is a BEC will give you consistent voltage to the servos for the entire run. As a Rx pack runs down the servos slow and reduce in power.

So if I yank the red wire from my MMM V2 that by the way works perfect and use a rx 6.0 volt pack can it cause any damage to the MMM v2.

Correct, however I recommend buying a 6 or 3 inch servo extension and removing the red wire from that and plugging in between. This way you don't have to hack up your MMM "in case" you want to use the BEC down the road.

I haven't used a receiver pack in a while, but I did in some of my first conversions. I actually ran a 2S lipo (say around 1500-2000 - generally still pretty small and light) with one of these Novak BEC regulators (they seem to have actually updated the design to be more lipo friendly with a warning LED so you don't overdischarge the pack):

Running a 2000 mAh 2S lipo with this in a LST2 with upgraded dual - 250oz servos I would run for a good 2 hrs and not even drain half the pack.

And with the regulator you don't have to worry anbout the voltage dropping. If the regulator bust and you get the pack voltage, I've read that most receivers won't fry with about 8v going through them.

I'm getting confused now.

So, do I have to cut the red wire from the ESC to Rx if using an rx pack plug into the battery post of the rx or leave all the wiring intact?

George, if you use the extension like I said with the red wire removed you can leave the wiring intact on your ESC.
