The extra length may just be to accommodate where they attach the wires to come out of the can.

The stator is 1515 sized, the extra length is in the front of the motor-

Im not sure, but spacing the stator back from the mounting screws was a great idea.

Nope, just the way the motor is designed really- more room to use longer mounting screws, which is nice.
