Info on neu motors with a gearbox - 04.06.2009, 11:18 PM

So I purchased a neu 1515 2d with a gearbox. I got a smoking deal, and also always wondered about the gearbox construction, etc.

Got the motor in today, and i can say that the gearbox is very nicely made. Took it off the motor, and found that the pinion attached to the motor shaft looks to be a 32p 8t pinion (looks like a clod pinion). The shaft coming out of the motor is less than 1.2 inch long, and the pinion looks to be bonded on.

So not much use for a car, unless I plan to use a 6mm bore pinion, which will fit over the pinion and could clamp to the existing pinions hub, which is exactly 6mm.

I plan to contact neu and see what they would charge me to swap a std car rotor in...

Any ideas who to contact about this?

I will take some pics tomorrow and post em up!

could you just grind the bonded pinion off? Just plug the motor and spin it slowly with low voltage so the pinion and shaft are spinning and then use a dremel on the pinion gear to grind it off. with the motor spinning you shouldnt have any problem keeping everything round. I'm sure you have good griding equipment at the body shop too.

Cant hurt, and if you wind up having to buy a new rotor cuz you messed up, you were going to do that anyway, right.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Silent...But Deadly

I sent neu a message last night to see what a new rotor would cost... I also mentioned my lack of use on the gearbox, so maybe I can work something out with them on it. If not I still have the gearbox sold. I will see before I grind anything down...

Steve Neu just responded to my email, told me to send it in and he would swap me in a std rotor, free of charge. Can't beat that service, not at all.
