Ghetto solder tab covers

I like my Tekin T8 truggy motor (1700kv), but don't like the exposed solder tabs. Heatshrink can be used, but I can never get it to work right. So, I came up with plastic covers made from pen caps. Black would have been better, but all I had was blue. Whaddya think?



Yeah, they're a little big, but it's just a prototype. Yeah, I seem to have too much time on my hands. It's the result of having no cash for new projects.

I've often wondered what "could" go wrong with having the solder tabs exposed? Sometimes I run my E Revo without the lid on it.

That's a novel idea. That doesn't look bad at all.

I really like how that motor looks. Been wanting one myself, but I'll probably wait until after Christmas just to be sure a new Tekin T8 is affordable ya know.

Do you have any pics of the entire setup? What I see looks pretty good.

Do you still have the old rotor laying around? I've been wondering if a Medusa Rotor will fit that motor, and also if there would be anything to gain by swapping it out?

The Medusa Rotor does have the exposed magnets on the very end. (Necessary for sensor operation).

I've been a little concerned about the rotor issue and ordering from an unknown vendor. (possibility of getting old stock with the troublesome rotor)

RC Monster is out of stock on them at the moment too.

I don't think anything could go wrong unless someting conductive happens to short across those connections. But, I just don't like esposed wires; seems unfinished.

The pen caps are just to see how well it works. Easy to make; a little dremel work and they just snap on and off. I don't pics of this exact setup, but aside from the motor, it's the same as the old pics of my XT8 (in my conversions page in sig) just a different motor.

Actually, the original rotor is still in the motor. I figured I would see if it holds up before I swapped it for the newer one that was included in the box. So far so good.

I just use liquid electric tape to cover all exposed wires. looks much more ghetto than your neat pen covers :)

We have most of the tekin motors back - and the missing motors are in transit. :)

And those pen caps have "cooling vents" on the end for those who do poor soldering jobs and the connection heats up.

Great job Brian, now get to work on something for the ESC connections. I've seen pics of ESCs that have one wire come loose and fry the whole thing.

That's easy: don't use connectors for the motor wires. The only time I had a wire come loose is when I used a connector from a Neu motor wire to the noodle wire. Using a butt connector and soldering the wires in it solves this.

how did you cut the front of the pen top so it fit on the motor so well? can you take a pic when you get a chance?
