Just bought an E-Revo 1/16 roller -
11.28.2010, 03:23 PM
Hey guys,
I've just purchased an E-Revo 1/16 roller, and I have a few questions about what I wish to do with it.
I need to buy a motor/esc combo for it. I didn't get the Velineon system with it because I want something better, and a motor with higher kv.
I'm not really sure which combo to go for, there are a few good options, particularly from Castle Creations and Mtronics. I'd like to get a motor in the 6000-7000kv range, and a waterproof esc as I plan to be running in the wet.
There is also the option of the Tenbol mount, but I think a 540 motor will be too much for it, and the C of G will be too high to be drivable.
I also need to get some lipo's. I will be running two 3s lipo's in parallel, but I don't know what the dimensions of the battery tray is. So if anyone knows them, please share so that I can do some research.
I think that's about all the questions, many thanks for any help given!

7000kv motor and 3s lipo? Hmmmm...
I think you'll find the stock vxl motor ( 3500kv ) is pretty much ideal for 2-3s lipo use, unless you really were planning on 100mph as your normal speed..
The castlecreations sidewinder or new SC esc and motors would be great, nice efficient little 4 pole motors that run cool even with high gearing.
I would look at what lipos minamps sells as being 'made-for' the mini erevo, locate dimensions and then look elsewhere to buy your packs.

I`ve read the merv foruma a bit on the Traxxas forum and Neil is 100% on the nose about what he said in his post.

The 1/16 vxl motor is 4000kv, on 3s its stupid fast, I really don't see the need for any more power or speed. It is a bit warm after 15 minutes on 3s but nothing to hot, only about 160

Well i've got a roller so I could always buy the VXL motor and a diffent esc, but 160F is too hot for my liking.
I'm looking at the Novak and Mtroniks systems, they look quite promising

I've gotta give another +1 to running the stock system. Normally I'm all for ditching the stock power system in favor of something more powerful but I race mine on 2s and rarely hit half throttle, bashing on 2s is all the power the truck can really handle. 3s and the power gets stupid. If I were to replace the motor with anything but another Velineon I'd probably go with an 11xx series Neu motor. The Velineon ESC isn't bad, I have left mine in because to me it isn't worth $100+ to replace it with something better that may not be as comfortable getting packed up with snow. I'm not real fond of the throttle, braking, button, etc. on the VXL-3m but spending almost my monthly car payment on another ESC just doesn't make sense to me. You can find stock systems on eBay pretty cheap--if you want the warranty they can be had for a good price as well.
All I ever wanted was an honest weeks pay for an honest days work.

told you the stock motor is perfect for 2s and 3s.... let me know if you change your mind about including the stock motor and all those 2s lipos with the truck before i ship it out tomorrow.
besides the stock motor, an 11xx series Neu motor would be ideal but it is just not needed honestly.

A good motor for the MERV? What is your budget? If the budget isn't an issue then have a look at NEU 1112 (I think it just fits with a little bit of modding) or 1110 (direct fit) series have to offer. If you are on a budget then a ARC 28-47-1 is a good motor too. The 4250kV is a little higher than stock but it is a very good little efficient motor. On 4S it was way cooler than the VXL motor on 3S it has to be a pretty efficient motor.
As for the ESC I used a Quark Roadster 65A (6S capable) which I used for speed runs but for running in the wet I used a Hobbywing EZRUN 60A that I waterproofed with plastidip. Worked a treat but I never actually drove through deep water but instead just puddles.

Just cause they have the same diameter doesn't make them equivalent. Pretty sure that Novak specifies that their 380 system isn't suitable for the little revo. The vxl system is really about the best setup for the truck. Maybe a mamba max or MMPro for an esc but as far as motors go there really aren't many suitable choices, that won't cost you a fortune.

Another vote for the traxxas motor being perfectly fine. Rebranded feigao or not it works great for its purpose. I was not however a fan of the stock esc, brakes sucked, and not very smooth on the takeoff, and touchy reverse for such a small rig. Put in a 60a ezrun and was tons better. It actually has a 35a ezrun in it now. I had stuck in it when I robbed the 60. The little 35a has given no problems, but would be more comfy with the 60a.

I don't know what diameter the stock motor is, but maybe the cc motor sale has something thatll work nicely for you.
