Happy halloween - 10.29.2011, 12:22 PM

I just have to share whats going on with our Halloween celebration this year. Normally I do not make a big deal out of such a pagan holiday celebration, but this year is different for us. Being located in the heart of the Czech Republic this is something that not only is a total unknown for most of the local people, but our neighborhood is one of the only places that actually has such a celebration that our kids as well as the local kids can join in on. Over the last 15 years or so with Americans working and living here this has caught on as a very special event to join in on from all over Prague. Our development is one of international residents from around the globe, and about 15-20 American families. Our kids are stoked about seeing this and showing the local kids just how much fun this can be for all of them. We have collected a full 20 gallon rubbermade tub filled with individually wrapped candies to hand out, and it weighs around 30-40lbs. We bought over $100 worth of American brand candy just for this night. The kids are carving pumkins, and hanging decorations all over the fornt of the house. We have had several locals stopping by just to take pictures and its only the 29th today. I have one of those WalMart special air-blown pumkins with the three ghosts on it, and a flashing dead kid nailed down in our front yard for the entertainment factor. The locals are loving it, but their very young kids are asking them WHY? And of course it is difficult for us to explain even to grownups.

Of course there is one other special reason that this holiday is a family ritual, and that is because one of our eight kids was born on 31/October and will turn 15 this year. So this should be a pretty good Halloween for us. So what are you guys doing this year for fright night?

Talking My Favorite Holiday - 11.01.2011, 10:01 AM

Saturday the kids and I power tooled some pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns using a jigsaw and a 1" spade bit. Safety was first on the list, but I doubt it was anymore dangerous than using a knife and carving kits are for single Moms.

A few nights ago I took our family to a haunted house and haunted hayride . The scary actors were people from the local theater and did a great job. We had a blast.

I felt like performing some art of my own last night. So I drove around on my moped wearing a mask and a hood scaring kids and parents that were out trick or treating. Good times!

Halloween night. - 11.01.2011, 10:26 AM

Well we had a blast last night doing the American rituals of Halloween here in Prague, and everyone seemed to appreciate what we had all put together considering where we are. My wife always keeps track of how many kids visit our humble home for trick or treating, and the number was right about 750 kids in total. She was pretty vigilent about catching repeat offenders to. There were also a lot of parents out watching over the whole ordeal just to make sure things stayed on the safe side. No one got hurt that we have heard about, and everyone got home safely. The costumes were awesome and everyone was very polite, which made it all worthwhile. The whole event started at 5PM and it was dark outside due to "daylight savings time" and ended at 7PM so they could clear the streets by 8PM, because the kids all have school today. We went through over 40lbs of candy, and nothing was broken during the attack of gouls and monsters. All-in-all a successful haunting.

Our son also invited about a dozen of his friends over to help celebrate his 15th birthday. He had not shared with us that they were all girls. A chip off the old block I guess. Everyone had a great time.
