Brushless system advice needed for J concepts BJ4 - 01.06.2007, 06:06 PM

hey guys......I'm getting one of these buggies within the next few weeks and think i'll be needing to upgrade to a newer type brushless system for it. Just need some opinions.

Also.i have two of the older Novak SS 5800 brushless set ups. It says i can run up to a 7 cell (8.4v) , is it possible to run a 2s lipo with this setup with out frying the equipment? I know hardly nothing about electrics so i could use your advice.

I'll be setting this up to run indoor stuff , and the 4wd class isn't all that big , but they are all modified 4wd's. I'l have to run a "saddle pack" , so i was looking for info on a good motor , esc that can run on a 2s lipo pack.......

any suggestions?

aslo.......anyone have experince with running one of the novak ss 5800 set ups??

I ran the original ss5800 in my xx4 a few years ago. It ran pretty well actually and never thermalled. But I had one of them that would run 220* and not thermal. :)

I would recomend a Sphere Comp/3 star combo or a MambaMax 5700/6700.

If you have a working ss5800... by all means try it before buying something else. It doesn't have lipo cutoff software but other than that it should work fine. Assuming the track is smaller (indoor) you probably don't have to be ballistic to compete, and the 5800 isn't exactly slow.

Thanks glassdoctor..............since i'm a complete moron with this elec stuff , is there anything i can use to help protect the battery from an over discharge...........some kind of a voltage detector of some type that would shut it down before it does damage?

Hey guys.....one more quick question. When i was running this ss 5800 set up on my XXX4 before , i never used a fan at all , and it would sometimes shut down from getting to hot after about 4-5 minutes of hard driving. does that little 25mm novak fan work ok to help possibly keep the esc a little cooler? Or is there another brand of fan that works better and would work on this esc? Not even sure what the fan hooks up to , to be honest to get it's power.

I haven't used a Novak fan but in general fans help a lot. I like a larger fan and more space between the fan and heatsink. For the SS, I would get a 40mm fan like from www.allelectronics.com... I believe they have some 5v 40mm ones.

Could be over/undergeared, or maybe no air due to an enclosed space the esc is in

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

It's been a while since i have driven the thing , but the gearing seemed to work pretty good. that could have something to do with it for sure , but i think because it's so sealed up inside that XXX4 body , it's hard to get good airflow in there. It would get hot enough , that if you left your finger on it for more than a second or two , it would burn you. Motor was pretty warm to, but not like the ESC.

4wd racing is a tall order for the original SS.... many guys have thermalled them or worse in this application.

Glassdoctor........I tried looking up a couple of your items you listed earlier with no luck. I'm not sure if mike carries these items or not. Do you have any links?
