MGM ESC and USBCOM+ ? -
09.07.2007, 09:39 AM
Has anyone here used the USBCOM+ connector and software ( http://mgm-compro.com/index.php?tid=...terface-usbcom) with their MGM ESC?
I have the 16024 and it's a real pain to program via the throttle stick (more than twice as many options and possible settings as the Castle ESCs).
Was wondering if this software was as easy and intuitive to use as the castle software.

Mike is actually planning on selling the software in the store. I know there is one or two people (maybe more) that tried the software. Can't remember any of their user names though...

I just got the usb com+ last night and set up my 16024. The software is easy to use. I am bummed that there is no setting for cut off voltage though (wanted 3.2 volts per cell).

When you say cut-off do you mean being able to set a specific cell voltage in addition to just being able to tell the controller if you are hooking up 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc number of lipos?

that sucks. I thought it would let you set it higher with the software. Thats one of the main reasons I wanted to try it. Well I also want to see what kind of amps the setup is pulling.

That is correct, you can choose the number of lipos, but no cut off voltage. However, I have the 16024 which is still the expert model (expert+ due october), whereas the 16018 and 22418 are expert+ models, may be a difference there, IDK.

I'm getting the new 160 from Mike . . . I hope that allows custom settings for cutoff. I guess I'll find out when I hook up the software. I can't wait!

The Expert+ doesnt allow adjustment for the cutoff voltage either. Just settings for cell count.
Does anyone know what the actual cut off voltage per cell is for the MGMs? I assumed it was 3.0V/cell, but it seems to be a bit higher than that. I run some lower end lipos for bashing and it seems to be very sensitive on the LVC. I wasnt sure what was happening, but under hard acceleration it want to trip the LVC. When I go back to neutral it resets and I can keep running so it appears to be the LVC. But when I checked it with an eagletree data recorder its not hitting the 3.0V/cell mark and it is triggering the lvc. It seems to be tripping at around 3.15v/cell. Id really like to be able to adjust the cut off voltage as well, but I dont think its possible. Setting the ESC to race mode eliminates the cutting out problem, but also disables the LVC. I can also eliminate the problem by setting the motor spool up timing higher, but that limits the acceleration, and therefore reducing the current draw. Also, my high end lipos have no problem and they never dip
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this same thing.
BTW: I see the same thing on both of my MGMs (16016 -new one and 16024 - old one)

According to my MGM instructions sheets, the programmking card does offer diffeerent options for per cell cut off

It looks like default is 3vper cell, but its limiting all the way from 3.8v down to the cutoff. It seems to calculate the voltage and use to help batteries run better without dipping too far too soon. this is according to the literature i got

Hmmm.... Sounds like I need to get the programing card too then. Dang. If its adjustable why cant they just make it available from all of the programaing options. Thats stupid that they only make it available from one of the 3 programaing options. (and it figures its the one I dont have.)

The older MGMs (like from a year ago) had a cutoff of about 3.2v, that I found from my testing. If my memory serves correctly, I found this by using my ICE set to motor break-in mode (essentially a variable-voltage power supply), and set the cutoff to hard cutoff on 2s Lipo. Then I decreased the voltage until the MGM cut the motor, at which point I was at 6.4v.

its possible, I'm just guessing. I have not put it to the test, My MGM just got zapped. The 2250 i was running shorted a phase and i didn't catch it before it shorted the MGM.
