It's completely normal;

The internal resistance of the capacitors is ~0 ohm when they are 0V, that's why they spark.

To protect the plugs, you can simple add an extra small 2mm plug to the + pole. First you hook up the - pole, than the small 2mm plug, which gets the punishment, then the big high current plug. You can also simple replace the plugs every now and then.

So for you the resistor is not necessary, just the extra little 2mm plug is enough?
Is this tips that MGM give on there web site is only to protect the main plug against the spark and prolonge the live of the plug or it's to protect the controller?

You guys should see the sparks I get with my HV setup. In my last video you might be able to here a little pop, but that was with just 22.2V .
